STAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVE AS AN INDEPENDENT MORTGAGE BROKER

The only constant in the mortgage industry is constant change. No matter how long you’ve been working in the business or how much success you’ve had, you either adapt to the changes or you risk falling behind. This was the driving force behind Rebecca’s move from retail mortgage lending to becoming an independent mortgage loan officer.

business “tiks” up

Rebecca had built a successful business over a nearly two-decade-long career as a retail loan officer. Around 2018, she realized she wanted to connect with potential borrowers earlier in their search for a mortgage, so she started creating educational videos for social media.

“As people saw that, they trusted me and then would reach out to me for their mortgage,” said Rebecca.

Her strategy paid off – big time. Rebecca’s business took off along with her popularity – she currently has more than 130K followers on TikTok alone.

As her social media presence was growing, Rebecca joined a marketing development group where she met some independent mortgage brokers and started hearing the advantages of working in the wholesale channel. Having worked in retail banking since 2007, it was an enlightening experience.

“That really opened my eyes to the different channels and the pros and cons of them,” said Rebecca.

HER IDEAL SITUATION

As she considered the possibilities, Rebecca kept coming back to the same question: “If I could have my ideal setup, what would that look like?” she said.

It was then that a good friend presented Rebecca with an opportunity to join their independent mortgage brokerage. It would allow her to plug right into their structure and keep doing what she does best.

“Instead of having to build it, it already existed,” said Rebecca. “Being able to tap into a company that gives that familiarity of operational support. That took away that worry that it was going to have to be something that I was going to have to build up myself.”

a stronger loan officer

Of the many benefits Rebecca has found since joining the wholesale mortgage channel, having a wide variety of loan products ranks high on her list. Not only does it give her more options to offer her borrowers, it also forces Rebecca to challenge herself in new ways.

I feel like it’s making me a stronger loan officer,” she said. “Because I need to have a working knowledge of everything that’s available versus five options.”

With the flexibility she wants and the support she needs, Rebecca’s business has never had a more optimistic outlook – regardless of the inevitable industry changes that lie ahead.

“Now, being on this side, I’m glad that I’m here for whatever comes ahead because I know that I'm going to be able to adapt and pivot faster with whatever that market shift is.”
