A FATHER’S CHOICE: FINDING A NEW CAREER IN THE MORTGAGE BUSINESS

One of the biggest benefits of being an independent mortgage loan officer is the flexibility that it offers. For some people, that not only means a better quality of work life, but also their personal life. Massimiliano didn’t just want the flexibility that comes with the job, he needed it.

“A PASSION OF MINE”

Massimiliano was born in Sicily and raised in Brooklyn, New York. By the age of 13, he was working in a neighborhood deli. He later ended up working at a sushi bar and trained as a sushi and teppanyaki chef.

“It’s a passion of mine, cooking,” said Massimiliano. “It’s always something I’ve loved.”

Massimiliano discovered a different type of love when he became a father. He’s a single dad of three, with two sons and a daughter. Unfortunately, the restaurant business and the hours it required didn’t align with Massimiliano’s need to be there for his children.

“I definitely needed something where I had the flexibility and the freedom to live dad life, something I cherish very much.”

Moving into Mortgages

A friend helped Massimiliano get a job at a software company and he quickly developed a knack for sales. Then, the pandemic, he found a new sales opportunity — as a mortgage loan officer.

Massimiliano had previously thought about working as a real estate agent but he was mostly unfamiliar with the mortgage business. Still, he was eager to pursue a career where he could help people with such a big moment in their lives.

Massimiliano started by working for a large retail bank but quickly realized that the retail business model wasn’t for him.

“I was just a number, a selling machine, basically,” he said. “A lot of times, I would just have to move them (clients) on to support and move on to the next sale. I wanted to work with people and be more involved from beginning to end.”

Living His Dream

Massimiliano transitioned to working for an independent mortgage broker and almost immediately saw the difference from his job in retail. He was finally able to guide his clients through the entire mortgage loan process. In doing so, Massimiliano feels a new kind of gratification.

“Being part of a family getting their first home and they never would’ve imagined they’d be homeowners,” said Massimiliano. “It's really opened up my entire world again to the way I always imagined it would be.”

As an independent mortgage loan officer, Massimiliano also has the ability to adjust his work schedule so he can be present as a dad. All these years after falling in love with cooking, Massimiliano has a new passion — one that allows him to have it all.

“I pinch myself sometimes because of the opportunity I have with this career, working as a broker, and it being my own business,” he said. “And then the flexibility and freedom I have to spend the time that I want to with my kids. I feel like I’m living my dream.”
