BACK TO BROKER: “THE MOST REWARDING PART OF MY ENTIRE CAREER”

A lot of mortgage brokers who got into the business before the financial crisis in 2008 left for retail before eventually coming back to wholesale. They came to realize that today’s broker channel is far different and a far more rewarding career than it was on their first go-around. It’s a realization George has come to since returning to his roots.

“We've been through all the ups and downs of the market, crashes, high rates, you name it, and getting back to wholesale is the most refreshing, rewarding part of my entire career,” said George.

A 22-year veteran of the industry, George has held nearly every mortgage sales role you can think of. He knows he must give his real estate partners a first-class experience to be successful – and that comes down to having control of the process.

“Mortgages are not an easy industry. And to have the ability to know every step of the way where that loan is, where the application is, is key to success here,” said George. “Because a real estate agent is going to ask you, ‘Where is my application?’”

During his time in retail, George also grew frustrated with the pay structure. He was putting in too many hours to see so much of his earnings go back to the company.

“Banks give you pennies or crumbs in comparison to wholesale, even at times where they're the most profitable. Nothing changes.”

With Wholesale, what has changed for George is his ability to win deals over his retail counterparts and the confidence he has thanks to his lender relationships – not to mention a flexible work schedule that gives him the freedom he desperately needed.

“We're crushing the competition in every way, shape and form. Speed, pricing, communication and the tools that we have,” said George. “When you have a solid partnership with a lender, I don’t see anybody stopping you.”

As he looks to the future, George feels he has found the sweetest of sweet spots with his rewarding career as an independent mortgage broker. Coming back to the broker channel has given him everything he could ask for.

“I enjoy the ability to work for myself and the freedom in wholesale that is unlike anything I've ever experienced before. I wouldn't trade it for anything.”
