BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND A FULFILLING CAREER IN MORTGAGES

Becoming a homeowner has always been a defining piece of the American dream. For those who weren’t born in the United States, it can hold even deeper meaning. A first generation immigrant, Robert’s achievement of homeownership also opened the door to a long and rewarding career in the mortgage business.

BUYING A HOME, FINDING A NEW CAREER

Robert and his family moved to New York City after emigrating from the former Soviet Union. His proficiency in math led Robert to a job as an actuary, using statistics to make projections.

“It was a very interesting career,” said Robert. “But I was sitting in front of a computer a lot and communicating with only my colleagues. I always wanted to meet more people.”

As it turned out, his opportunity to do that came once his friends and family members learned that he had purchased his first home.

“Knowing that I have a math background, they started asking me questions about how mortgages work,” said Robert. “People started saying, ‘You're explaining it so well, why not try to do this maybe as a career?’ And that's how it all started for me.”

THE MOST DIVERSE PLACE ON THE PLANET

Robert went to work for a mortgage broker in the New York area and began serving the people in his community. Many of them were hard-working immigrants like Robert who were not familiar with the mortgage process. Before long, Robert became a top producer in the company and decided to open his own independent mortgage brokerage. Located in Queens, Robert tailored his company to serve as many people as he could.

“Queens is the most diverse place on the planet. There are more than 142 nationalities that live here,” said Robert, who has team members who speak more than 10 different languages. “It's amazing how people gravitate to those who speak their language fluently.”

A NOBLE JOB

Robert’s dedication to serving his clients aligns perfectly with his role as an independent mortgage broker. His company is looking to the retail mortgage lending sector to recruit because Robert believes so strongly that the wholesale channel provides more opportunities for both originators and their borrowers.

“The opportunities to grow here in the broker channel are much wider because we have a variety of products that are not available to retail,” he said.

A variety of products for a variety of borrowers. Robert has had many clients who he helped with their first home purchase years ago, and because of the great service they received, they became repeat customers. For Robert, there’s nothing better than growing a business and helping others grow, too.

“I consider mortgages to be a noble job,” said Robert. “We are really changing lives.”
