THE CAREER SHE ALWAYS WANTED

You never know when you’re going to find a job that you love. For some, it happens early in their careers. For others, it doesn’t happen until later or never happens at all. When Brandie decided to join the mortgage industry, it was the first time in her life that she truly did something for herself.

YOU BASICALLY PROCESSED THIS LOAN YOURSELF

In 2019, Brandie and her husband decided to buy a house and found a local independent mortgage broker to get a loan. From the start of the process, she was impressed by the experience. It was a sentiment that was reciprocated by the mortgage broker, who jokingly told Brandie that she basically processed the loan herself.

“When I would send him bank statements, I would highlight them and put sticky tabs beside it,” said Brandie, who has always prided herself on being very organized and curious by nature. “He said, ‘I’ve never had anybody do this for me before I asked for it,’ and I said ‘That’s just the way I do everything.’”

Brandie and her independent mortgage broker stayed in touch over the next year and a half. One day, she was driving by his office and noticed a lot of cars in the parking lot. ‘“I texted him and said ‘I hope that means business is good,’” said Brandie. “He replied, ‘I need help.’” In December of 2020, she joined the company as a loan processor.

SOMETHING FOR HERSELF

For Brandie, this was much more than a job opportunity. It was a chance to do something she’d always wanted to do.

“I had my daughter when I was a teenager and I’ve just focused my entire life on that,” she said. “I think the push was wanting my kids to be proud of me, and wanting to have something I earned by myself, for myself, and that no one could take away from me.”

After gaining experience in loan processing, Brandie decided to take the next step and become a mortgage loan officer. With support from her new co-workers, she studied diligently and took many practice tests. When she passed her NMLS exam, she realized how far she had already come.

“It definitely took some getting out of my comfort zone and putting myself out there, but I’m so glad that I did because it’s completely changed my life.”

KNOWING HER STUFF

The attention to detail that first caught the eye of her independent mortgage broker has served Brandie well in her new career. She’s also realized the importance of knowing her stuff as a local mortgage expert.

“Personal relationships are so big here because we are just a small town,” she said. “So you either have to know or you have to be able to give a quick answer and then get back to people quickly.”

In her short time in the mortgage industry, Brandie now believes that she’s found her calling. For the first time in her life, she has a career she can call her own.

“All of the jobs I had were part time or nothing that was toward an actual career. They were just jobs,” she said. “So when I look back and think about what that potential is for the future, it’s just limitless.”

Brandie also has a message for others who might be in the same shoes she was in before. “It doesn’t matter what your age is. No matter how long you wait, you can still chase those dreams.”
